Brief substance The 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatri-ation Act authorized establishment of an advisorycommittee to carry out a long list of specific duties. Char-tered on August 20, 1991, the Native American GravesProtection and Repatriation Review Committee has held42 meetings over the subsequent 19 years. The reviewcommittee’s responsibilities include monitoring the sum-mary, inventory, and repatriation process; facilitating theresolution of disputes; compiling an inventory of culturallyunidentifiable human remains and recommending specificactions for their disposition; consulting with the Secretaryof the Interior in the development of regulations; and sub-mitting an annual report to Congress. This paper examinesthe review committee’s establishment and activities andassesses its effectiveness
